On Monday, a group of residents intercepted S Mahendran of Coimbatore while he was taking two boxes of tonic on a two-wheeler near Pooluvapatti in the city.

The boxes belonged to Neruperichal UPHC in GN Gardens. Mahendran told the residents that the tonic would be expired by December end and could not be distributed to pregnant women, the targeted beneficiaries. He said the tonic would be utilised as fertiliser for coconut trees.

The Anupparpalayam police conducted an inquiry with Mahendran but he was let off after the corporation officials concerned said the tonics were only being taken to a sub-health centre at Vavipalayam.

A senior corporation official said, “The tonic was being taken to the sub-health centre. However, an unauthorised person was utilised for transporting it. So, pharmacist Dhanalakshmi has been placed under suspension.”
