Three of Coimbatore family die in road accident

COIMBATORE: Three members of a Coimbatore

family

died and three others suffered injuries when a car they were travelling in rammed the rear portion of a stationary truck at Vellakoil in

Tirupur

district in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Mayilsamy, 39, of Singnallur, his wife Indhu, 27 and his mother Kousalya, 60. Mayilsamy’s son Guru Gowtham, 12, daughter Ramya Gandhimathi, 10, and his sister Kalaivani,35, suffered severe injuries. They were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

Police said Mayilsamy had been working in Dubai. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he returned to his hometown.


The accident happened when Mayilsamy and his family members were going to Thanjavur to visit temples there.

Due to the heavy downpour, the visibility was very low on the busy Trichy road. A truck, which was heading to Trichy from Coimbatore, broke down at Olapalayam near Vellakoil. Driver R Babu, 46, of Trichy parked the truck on the roadside and was carrying out repairing work under the vehicle.

Mayilsamy, who was driving the car, did not notice the truck due to poor visibility. The car rammed the rear part of the truck. The accident happened around 4.30am.

The Vellakoil police were investigating.
