Three arrested for stalking female dentist in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Three men were arrested in Coimbatore on Friday night for stalking a female dentist and assaulting her father-in-law, who questioned them.


Police said the incident occurred around 4.30pm on Friday, when Vinitha Priyadharshini, 25, of Karamadai, was walking to her dental clinic in the same locality.

“The trio - H Mohammed Azaruddin, 22, of Kannarpalayam Road; A Ibrahim, 25, of Kundha Colony; and J Moses, 34, of Kumaran Nagar - followed her on a bike and Ibrahim winked at her. They stalked her again at 7pm, when she was standing in front of her clinic,” a police officer said. All the three were residents of Karamadi.

Priyadharshini, the officer said, immediately alerted her husband Praveen, who along with his father Anandaraj rushed to the spot and questioned the trio for stalking her. “The trio argued with Praveen and Anandaraj and Azaruddin attacked Anandaraj with a stone. Anandaraj suffered minor injury to his left hand.”

Meanwhile, the officer said, Nizaruddin, president of Karamadai area Social Democratic Party of India, reached the spot and questioned the trio. “Azaruddin verbally abused him and tried to grab a knife from a nearby meat shop to attack him. However, people in the vicinity rushed to the spot, thrashed the trio and handed them over to the Karamadai police around 7.30pm.”

Later, Praveen lodged a complaint with the Karamadai police, who registered a case against the trio for stalking the dentist and attacking her father-in-law the same night and arrested them. They were booked under sections 294(b), 323, 354 and 506(ii) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act. On Saturday morning, the three were produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody.
