TIRUPUR: A private schoolteacher was arrested on Tuesday for sexually harassing six girl students in the name of checking cheat sheets during the Class XII board exam at VK Govt Higher Secondary School at Venkamedu.
The Tirupur North all-woman police identified the arrested person as Sampathkumar, 34, a teacher with a private school at Ammapalayam.
According to a police officer, the incident occurred during the last day of the Class XII board exam on Tuesday.
"Sampathkumar was the exam invigilator at VK Govt Higher Secondary School. He groped six girl students on the pretext of checking for cheat sheets. After the exam, the girl students informed the school headmaster that the teacher had sexually harassed them in the name of checking," the officer said.
The students also informed their parents and relatives, who reached the school and laid siege to it. The school headmaster informed the Tirupur North all-woman police, who took the teacher to the police station.
"We held an inquiry with the girls and confirmed that their charges were true. We subsequently booked the teacher under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and arrested him. He was produced before a judicial magistrate and lodged in jail under judicial custody at night," the officer said.
