Police identified the shooter as Sundaram’s cousin C Selvamuthukumar, 53, a Chennai-based dentist. “On Sunday morning, after sharpening his skill by shooting at a glass bottle, Sundaram handed over the loaded airgun to Selvamuthukumar. While Sundaram was trying to place another glass bottle for target practice, Selvamuthukumar accidentally pulled the trigger and the pellet pierced Sundaram’s abdomen,” a police officer said.

Selvamuthukumar and relatives rushed Sundaram to a private hospital at Sitra in Coimbatore city. After doctors alerted police, cops from the Mahalingapuram police station visited the hospital and met Sundaram. Police ruled out foul play, but registered a case under Section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.
