COIMBATORE: An 85-year-old man was murdered by his 40-year-old mentally challenged grandson at Veerakkal near Parali in Pillur Dam, Coimbatore on Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as K Mannan. The accused has been identified as S Murugesh.

According to the police, Mannan was at home on Thursday night when Murugesh him and asked him to lend him a few tobacco products.

Mannan refused to give him what he demanded. Angered over this, Murugesh took a stone and smashed it on his grandfather Mannan’s head. The old man was also attacked with a wooden log. Mannan died on the spot.

Pillur Dam police were informed by Mannan's neighbours following which his body was sent to Mettupalayam government hospital for post-mortem.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Murugesh was mentally challenged for the last 10 years. He was not given proper treatment by his family. Due to this reason police were unable to arrest and remand the accused in custody.

Police officials advised Murugesh’s family members to admit him in a government hospital for treatment. A police officer from Pillur Dam said that after discussing with higher officials and legal experts, further action will be taken.
