Stormwater drain and water supply works at Coimbatore’s Lanka Corner to be over by Sunday night
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore corporation says it will complete stormwater drain and 24/7 water supply pipeline works at Lanka Corner by Sunday night.
The corporation has been carrying out two major road cutting works simultaneously at this junction for the past 10 days. As part of this, the main feeder line of the 24/7 water supply running from the State Bank Road and the Trichy Road before the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital was being connected. For this purpose, a pipeline for a length of 70 meters was being laid.
On the other end, major stormwater drainage improvement works are also being carried out. The existing drain system was inadequate, with persistent water clogging and stagnation reported during rainfall. Hence, the corporation installed a series of precast box culverts for 60 metres.
According to a senior official, around 20 metres of the drain work is completed, and the remaining work on 40 metres along the CMCH is in progress which will be completed by Sunday night.
The official said, "The current precast is bigger than the existing one. It is about 1.5 metres high and more than two metres wide and can handle the rainwater effectively. Usually, it would take at least 30 minutes for the water to drain out, but since its dimensions have now been increased, the timing would be reduced. Work on the 60 metres will be completed by Sunday night, along with the restoration of roads. At present, the estimate of the stormwater drain is Rs 60 lakh. There might be changes in the budget, which will be ascertained after the entire project is completed."
Meanwhile, vehicular traffic in the Railway Junction-CMCH stretch, which had been diverted via the Trichy Road for over a week to facilitate the works, was restored on Friday.
