Stolen panchaloha idols recovered

Salem: A 38-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for stealing seven small panchaloha idols worth Rs2 lakh from Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple near Tharamangalam here on May 21. Police have recovered all the seven idols from him. The Tharamangalam police identified the arrested person as C Sakthivel, 38, of Kullanur. “He entered the temple on May 21 and decamped with the panchaloha idols. The temple authorities lodged a complaint with the Tharamangalam police, who registered a case and initiated an inquiry by checking CCTV footage from the temple. They zeroed in on Sakthivel with the help of CCTV footage,” district superintendent of police R Sivakumar said. Police subsequently picked up Sakthivel, who confessed to the crime. He was arrested and lodged in the Salem Central Prison under judicial custody.
