COIMBATORE: Following a clash between the
AIADMK and DMK cadre in Pollachi assembly constituency on March 28, the rural police on Saturday formed a special team to arrest the son of deputy speaker and the assembly constituency AIADMK candidate Pollachi V Jayaraman and a few others.
A police source said that two AIADMK men were picked up by the Vadakkipalayam police and the party had pressurised police officers to release the duo.
However, senior police officials clearly instructed to arrest the accused if the case was genuine.
N Parthasarathy, 28, from Okkilipalayam near Pollachi lodged a complaint with Vadakkipalayam police on March 29.
He mentioned in his complaint that he is a member of the DMK party and was serving at Okkilipalayam village as the panchayat president.
Parthasarathy has arranged a public meeting as part of the election campaign for Pollachi DMK candidate Dr Varadharajan at his village on March 28.
The same night, AIADMK deputy speaker Pollachi Jayaraman’s son Praveen and a few others threatened him for arranging the public meeting and invited a speaker Sabarimala to address the villagers.
A source said that Pollachi Jayaraman instigated his son and others to assault Parthasarathy.
Based on the complaint, Vadakkipalayam police registered a case against eight people, including Jayaraman and his son Praveen under 143 (Punishment for rioting), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and four more sections of Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile A Amalraj had taken charge as Inspector General of Police, west zone two days ago and he conducted a meeting with Superintendents of Police (SP) of the eight districts through videoconferencing on Friday.
He instructed the officials to arrest the accused in connection with the cases reported after the model code of conduct came into force.
Following the instruction, Coimbatore district SP S Selvanagarathinam ordered the Vadakkipalayam police to arrest Praveen and others in connection with the assault case.
The police source said, "Two AIADMK cadre were pickedup in connection with the case and the AIADMK leaders approached the police officials to release the duo. However, the police denied and planned to produce them before the court."
On March 27, Vadavalli police registered a case against Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani’s close aide Vadavalli Chandrasekar for criminally intimidating Thondamuthur DMK candidate Karthikeya Sivasenapathi in a public meeting.
Chandrasekar was the publisher of Namathu Amma newspaper and secretary of MGR youth wing, Coimbatore urban district. He was booked under sections 294 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words in or near any public place) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
On Friday night, a team of police from Vadavalli station visited Chandrasekar’s house in connection with the case. He had already obtained an anticipatory bail and showed the bail papers to the police. Meanwhile more than 50 lawyers from AIADMK legal wing visited the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP,West Zone) at Race Course on Saturday afternoon to register their condemnation for sending a police team to Chandrasekar’s house.
