Six engineering students arrested for assaulting senior in college near Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The KG Chavadi police in Coimbatore district on Monday arrested six first-year engineering students, including three minor boys, for assaulting a senior student.

The six students, aged between 17 and 18 years, are doing bachelor of engineering and bachelor of technology courses in Nehru Institute of Technology at Kaliyapuram.

On Saturday, the college authorities suspended 13 first-year students, including the six arrested, for assaulting the senior student, who pursues an MA in criminology at the Nehru College of Arts and Science.

The first-year students suspected that their money was stolen by the senior student. They assaulted him in the college hostel, first on March 20 night and then on March 21 morning. He was injured in the attack.

Based on his complaint, the police registered a case against six students under sections 191 (2), 296 (b), 115 (2), 118 (1), and 351 (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The three minor students were produced before the juvenile justice board and later lodged in an observation home. The remaining three students were remanded in judicial custody.
