Udhagamandalam: Kerala forest officials on Monday tranquillized and captured the rogue elephant Pandalur Makhna-2 (PM-2), which killed two women at Pandalur, at Sultan Bathery in the Muthanga forest range near Wayanad. Muthanga forest range officer P Saleem said, “When the elephant entered Sultan Bathery on January 6, we alerted locals not to venture out. Section 144 was also imposed for a day.”
He said, “A team was formed to monitor the movement of the elephant. Around 10am on Monday, the elephant was captured.”
It was later brought to the Muthanga elephant camp in the Wayanad wildlife division and kept in a kraal. The rogue elephant used to raid crops and damage houses for rice in the Gudalur division. It was popularly known as ‘Arisi Raja’ and has killed two women in two months. Last December, the Nilgiris forest officials captured released the jumbo it into the Congress Mattam area in the buffer zone of MTR. A few days ago, the elephant moved to the Kerala border.
