The said fund was allocated under the social security scheme to provide financial aid to the poor people, who were struggling to get medical treatment.
“While auditing the scheme, the authorities found discrepancies in the account. They discovered that Suresh had transferred Rs 30 lakh to ineligible beneficiaries, who were paid a share of it for helping him swindle the money,” a police officer said.
Investigations found that Suresh had entered fake names in the beneficiary list and managed to obtain signatures from the collector in three cheques of Rs 10 lakh each. “Suresh sealed a deal with Selvakumar, Venkatesan and Vinoth to act as beneficiaries. Lawrence and Kalimuthu helped the revenue inspector in finalizing the deal with others,” the officer said.
Suresh was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody. The others were already arrested in connection with the case.
Police have also sent a report to the revenue department about the arrest. “Suresh was allowed to continue in the post as we were waiting for police investigations to complete. Once we receive the report from police, he will be placed under suspension,” a senior revenue official said.
