ERODE: In an unusual petition submitted to collector H Krishnanunni on Monday, residents of Jayagopal Street in Thirunagar Colony here urged him not to close the Tasmac outlet opearting in their locality.

K Murali, one of the petitioners, said the shop has been functioning in the same spot for more than three decades and local residents have no grievance against the shop. “Not a single resident of the area had approached the authorities seeking the closure of the shop,” he said.

Another petitioner S Boopathy said some people claiming to be activists are trying to close the shop or relocate it to some other place for their personal benefit. “If they are able to achieve their scheme, it will cause great distress to local residents as the nearest Tasmac shop will be 4km away. We are daily wage worker who perform hard physical labour, and it would be hassle for us to travel 4km to get a liquor bottle,” he said.

The collector received the petition and forwarded it to the concerned officials. He directed them to inspect the shop.
