TIRUPUR: A few relatives and neighbours of V Shankar, a dalit man who was murdered for marrying a woman from the thevar community, have objected to the remarriage of Shankar's widow Kausalya. At a meeting on Tuesday, around 50 people from the devendra kula velallar community resolved to distance themselves from Shankar's family.

The meeting, held at Komaralingam near Udumalpet, passed a resolution condemning the activities of Kausalya.

Sources said they have forwarded the resolution to various government departments, including the Adi Dravidar welfare department, urging them to withdraw the government job given to Kausalya.

"Following the murder of Shankar, we stood with Kausalya and helped her to get justice. But after getting a central government job and other benefits, Kausalya changed her route," said Durairaj, a relative of Shankar's father C Velusamy, said. "She has erased memories of Shankar and has married a youth from her thevar community. This is all she could do after earning the anti-caste crusader tag," he added.

Durairaj alleged that Kausalya now wanted capital punishment awarded to her father B Chinnasamy commuted. "We never wanted any activism at Komaralingam in the name of caste. But the Shankar Samuganeethi Trust, which she founded, was involved in activism. This was affecting the peaceful atmosphere of the village," Durairaj said.

When contacted, Velusamy said Kausalya had not expressed a wish to have capital punishment for her father commuted."
