COIMBATORE: An inter-caste couple was reportedly kidnapped by the wife's family on Thursday night from near Thondamuthur on the outskirts of the city. Rural police arrested the girl's father and one of her relatives on Friday for their alleged involvement in the crime. A special team has been sent to Erode to rescue the couple.
P Eswaran, 35, from Thennamanallur village near Thondamuthur is the driver of a private bus and belongs to thevar community.
He was in a relation with P Madhumathi from Kondayampalayam village. She is a graduate and belongs to gounder community.
When Madhumathi's parents came to know about the affair they rejected it. However, Eswaran and Madhumathi got married on June 12 in a temple in the presence of Eswaran's family members.
After the marriage the couple went to Podanur police station and sought protection. Police officers managed to pacify the parents of the couple and finally sent them back to Thennamanallur. It is alleged that on Thursday night, the couple was kidnapped by the girl's father and a few of her relatives.
Eswaran's family members have filed a complaint with Thondamuthur police. The girl's father Palanisamy and one of his relatives, Ganeshan were arrested on Friday.
"We suspect that the couple has been kept under confinement at Erode. A special team has been sent to Erode to rescue them," said sub-inspector Suseela, Thondamuthur police station.
