Coimbatore: Periyar Ramaswamy Street in

P N Pudur

became a centre of attention for a few officials in the city corporation on Friday when they were informed that Periyar name was misspelled on the street board.
While it was not known whether the extra ‘w’ was a mistake or an intentional act, the corporation immediately swung into action and corrected the spelling to ‘Periyar Ramasamy’ on Saturday. The name was also misspelled in

Tamil

.

N Chandran

, CPI secretary of P N Pudur, said he used the road frequently, but he did not notice the mistake. “The board was set up 2-3 years ago by the previous government. A few residents brought to my attention recently that name was misspelled on the board. I immediately took it to the notice of K A Deivanai, chairman of west zone of the corporation,” he said.
He alleged that the previous government intentionally changed the spelling of Periyar with some ulterior motives.
“However once informed, the corporation officials corrected the spelling in both Tamil and English on Saturday night,” he said.
