Coimbatore: The city police have instructed commuters not to cross the speed limit of 40kmph on the flyovers to curb fatal accidents.
The move comes close on the heels of the death of a speeding biker, who crashed his two-wheeler into the parapet wall of the newly constructed Trichy Road flyover and fell off it.
Identifying the deceased as M Prasanth, 28, a police officer said he lost control over the speeding bike while negotiating a curve on the flyover on Sunday.
When the issue came to the notice of city police commissioner V Balakrishnan, he inspected the flyover on Tuesday in the presence of highways department officials and instructed the traffic police to take measures to improve the safety of commuters, especially on the flyovers.
A traffic police officer said they had placed barricades on Trichy Road flyover to prevent vehicles from speeding. “We have also installed reflectors and signages to remind commuters about the speed limits and advise them against overtaking other vehicles on the flyover.”
Pointing out that only temporary measures were taken for now, he said a few permanent measures would be taken to improve the safety of commuters soon.
Police have asked the commuters not to use the Valankulam arm of Trichy Road flyover, as the same was still under construction.
A source with the city police said the speeding violations were being checked at various places. “Checking will be heightened in the coming days. Speeding on the flyovers will also be monitored to bring down accidents and improve the safety of commuters.”
