Coimbatore: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered the state government to provide a compensation of 50,000 to an Erode-based person and recover the amount from a police inspector and sub inspector, who arrested the person last year despite being stabbed by a friend. The commission has also directed the government to take disciplinary action against the two police officers.
The ruling came based on the petition that P
Moorthy alias Krishnamurthy, of Paraman Thottam at Karumandisellipalayam near Perundurai in Erode district, filed before SHRC against Chennimalai police inspector M Selvaraj and Perundurai police sub inspector M Senthilkumar in 2020.
An official source said Moorthy’s friend
Senthil Kumar was planning to get his daughter married to another friend Durai alias Thangavel’s son. “When the marriage plan was stopped, Moorthy met Senthil on June 10, 2020, and asked him what happened. Senthil picked up a quarrel with Moorthy and stabbed him on his forehead and right hand with a small knife.”
The same day, police took Moorthy to the station and he lodged a complaint against Senthil. But police did not register a case. Senthil, who was a close aide of a former Perundurai MLA, lodged a complaint with police, who registered a case against Moorthy and arrested him. He was later remanded in judicial custody.
In his petition to SHRC, Moorthy sought action against the two police officers for violation of human rights.
The police officers field a counter petition, stating Moorthy and his friends had assaulted Senthil. They said Moorthy sustained injuries when he attempted to escape from police and dashed against an iron gate.
After hearing the arguments of both the sides, SHRC member D Jayachandran on Thursday ordered the state government to pay a compensation of 50,000 to Moorthy within a month of accepting the copy of the order. The government was also directed to recover 25,000 each from the police inspector and sub inspector.
