Coimbatore: The work on the Pillur III water scheme, a project to meet the drinking water needs of the newly added areas to the city corporation, has made substantial progress, said corporation commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara after inspecting the project on Tuesday.
The project, with
Bhavani river as its water source, is being implemented at a cost of 779 crore.
The project includes building a pumping station, a treatment plant, distribution system and construction of a 900m tunnel.
“The treatment plant, with a capacity of 174 millions of liter per day (MLD), is constructed at Thandiperumalpuramat at a cost of 104.90 crore. It will be completed by August. Almost 30% construction work of the pumping station has been completed,” the commissioner said.
The pumping station is being built at Murugaiyan Parisalthurai in Nellithurai panchayat, 16km away from Thandiperumalpuram, at a cost of 134crore.
“The construction of the 900m tunnel at Kattanmalai to bring water through pipelines will be completed in 20 days. Already work covering 830m has been completed.”
The water will be brought to a reservoir at Pannimalai, from where it would be supplied to the added areas in the corporation.
An official said Pillur water schemes helped meet the major part of the water requirements of the city. The Pillur I and II schemes were designed to provide 150 MLD of water. The city is getting 136 MLD of water at present from the schemes. The city will get an additional 178 MLD of water once the Pillur III project is commissioned. The work for the project was started in June 2020.
The project was envisaged keeping in mind the water requirements of the projected population of the city in 2035.
