COIMBATORE: The number of pet shops that have been sprouting up in the city bears testimony to the growing pet business. In the year 2000 the city had only two pet shops but today there are 50. "Every year we see a 50 percent growth in the pet business," says R Deepak, President of the Coimbatore Pet Lovers Association.
Dogs seem to be the most sought-after pets.

One of their most appealing characteristics is their loyalty. The cost of a pedigree dog ranges from Rs 2,000 to more than Rs1lakh. Animal lovers seem to be spending increasing amounts of money to own and care for pets. This has triggered a growth in pet-related services in the city from grooming centres to multi-speciality hospitals and even boarding houses for them when owners go out of town.
The 'Pets Forum' at Sai Baba Colony, a multi-speciality hospital for pets, provides a range of facilities for them. They have a team of specialists from orthopaedics to ophthalmologists for pets. The most popular services seem to be the luxury services including spa treatment. Toys are food specifically catering to pets are also available. "If you truly love your pet, you will give them the best," says Dr R Binu a consultant working at the hospital. They also provide advice on food and toys based on the breed.
From burgers to sausages there are a variety of mouth-watering foods available for dogs in the market. Dr Binu says that depending on the breed and age, the diet varies. Smaller breeds like Pomeranians should be given food which can be easily chewed, while bigger breeds like German Shepherds can enjoy food items which are larger in size.
Dog toys include a variety of bones of different shapes and sizes and slippers. "For some reason dogs love playing with slippers," says Dr Binu. There are even dolls which dogs can safely chew without choking. These toys detract them from destroying sofas and shoes.
Day care facilities are essential for pet owners so that they have a place to leave their pet while travelling. N Vishal, who completed his graduation runs a day care centre at his home. "People hand over their pets to me when they leave town," he says. His friend R Raj, a diploma student has a unique job of walking dogs. "I pick them up from their homes and walk them in the mornings and evenings. I charge Rs250 per day for each dog," he says.
