‘No increase in fever cases in Coimbatore’

District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar and deputy director of health services Dr P Balusamy have denied reports that there is an increase in fever cases in the city.

“The situation is normal, and there is nothing to panic,” Giriyappanavar said.

Balusamy said there was no specific surge in fever cases specifically with any flu symptoms. “The spike in cases is assessed with the increase in inpatients (IPs), which, as of now, is under control. On an average, only 15-20 IPs are recorded in the district per day, which is completely normal,” he said.

“There was a spike in cases in September last year when the average IP rose to 40. This year, there is a slight increase in the outpatient cases with fever cases, which was prominently seen in the last two weeks. In the present week, the cases have reduced,” he said.

There is no increase in fever cases treated in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, dean Dr M Geethanjali said. “Approximately 50 to 60 fever OP cases, and three to seven fever IP cases are recorded per day as per the usual trend,” she said.
