Nilgiris court sentences man to 20 years of imprisonment for impregnating wife’s minor sister
COIMBATORE: The Nilgiris mahila court on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old man to 20 years’ imprisonment for impregnating a 16-year-old girl who is his wife’s sister.The man was working as a labourer in a tea estate in Kotagiri in the district. The girl was studying in a school in Salem. In March 2021, the man went to the hostel where the girl was staying, spoke to the hostel warden and brought her to Kotagiri. He told the girl that he wanted to marry her. When she refused, he threatened her, saying that if she did not agree, he would abandon her sister. He then sexually assaulted her and raped her multiple times.On June 30, 2021, the girl was admitted to Kotagiri Government Hospital after she fell sick. Doctors examined her and said she was pregnant. A case was registered at the Coonoor all women police station. Investigations revealed that her sister’s husband had raped and impregnated her. Mahila court judge M Senthilkumar on Monday sentenced the man to 20 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. The judge recommended that Rs 2 lakh compensation be provided to the girl. Public prosecutor P Senthilkumar represented the prosecution.
