NHAI invites tenders for maintenance of Neelambur–Madukkarai Bypass
COIMBATORE: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited tenders for operation and maintenance of the Neelambur–Madukkarai Bypass for a period of one year. The 28km bypass, maintained by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited, was handed over to the NHAI on March 31.
An NHAI official said, “A gazette notification was published on April 25 for the entrustment of the road to the NHAI. On Friday, we invited tenders for its one-year maintenance. The road will be maintained in its current condition during this period.”
He added that a preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for widening the two-lane stretch was under way. “Once the DPR is completed, we will send the proposal to the govt for approval. After that, we will invite tenders for the expansion work,” the official said.
“If land acquisition is required, we will initiate the process. If not, we will immediately call for tenders to widen the road. Based on the lowest bid, we will issue the work order. The selected contractor will be responsible for maintaining the stretch for one year,” he said.
During the maintenance period, the contractor will implement short-term measures to prevent accidents at identified blackspots. “We will also provide an initial road management system, including an ambulance, a towing crane and a route patrol team,” the official said.
Currently, there are six toll plazas along the 28km stretch. “The number of toll plazas will be reduced to one, with only the last toll plaza near Madukkarai remaining operational. We have already sent a proposal to the ministry of road transport and highways, and they are scrutinising the report. Once the gazette notification is issued, we will wind up the other five toll plazas,” he added.
Until May 31, L&T will continue to maintain the road and collect tolls, which will be deposited into the Union govt's account. “This maintenance period may be extended by another month,” the official noted.
