COIMBATORE: A 36-year-old woman and her teenaged daughter were held at knife point for about an hour in Chettipalayam on the outskirts of the city early Thursday morning, by a six-member gang of robbers who stole nine sovereigns of gold ornaments. Her husband and son slept through the attack as the robbers had sprayed a sedative chemical on them.
According to police, real-estate businessman Chinnaraj alias Varadarajan (41) was residing at K K Nagar near Chinniyampalayam on the outskirts of the city.
His wife V Jayabharathi (36), and daughter V Manju (16), a class X student and son V Arunkumar, a class VIII student, were fast asleep when the robbers entered the home.
The gang entered the home around 2 am by opening the terrace door. They found Varadarajan and his son Arunkumar sleeping in a room which remained opened. The gang had sprayed some sedative chemicals over their face to ensure that they would not wake up.
Jayabharathi and her daughter Manju were sleeping in another room and the gang entered the room with knives. They threatened the duo saying that they would be killed if made any sound. The gang spent at least an hour in the home but could not find any jewels or money. Finally, they snatched six sovereigns of gold jewels from Jayabharathi.
When Jayabharathi and Manju tried to wake Varadarajan and Arun Kumar up, they remained asleep. When they woke up much later, they informed the police. Chettipalayam police rushed to the spot and conducted a detailed inquiry. A special team has been constituted to investigate the matter and nab the culprits.
