COIMBATORE: A minivan caught fire while it was moving on the Chinnasamy Road in the city on Friday afternoon. All the four occupants in the vehicle escaped unhurt. But the vehicle was gutted completely.
Kattoor police said a patient from Tirupur district and two of his family members came to a private hospital on the Chinnasamy Road in Coimbatore in the morning. P Santhosh Kumar, 25, of Sembiyanallur drove the minivan.
After consultation, they were returning home in the minivan. When they reached near the BPL Corner around 1.20pm, Santhosh Kumar switched the fuel from LPG to petrol. He noticed smoke emanating from the engine. He stopped the minivan, and all of them got off the vehicle. Soon the vehicle caught fire. Santhosh Kumar and other motorists tried to put out the fire. However, their efforts went in vain.
On being alerted, fire and rescue services personnel reached the spot in seven minutes. But the vehicle was gutted completely by then. Traffic was affected on the busy road for a few minutes.
The Kattoor police registered a case.
