COIMBATORE: The Singanallur police have formed two special teams to arrest a suspect who allegedly set afire a 30-year-old daily wage labourer over previous enmity near the Singanallur bus stand on Saturday night.

The victim has been identified as M Suresh of Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district. He is still battling for life for the past two days at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in the city.

According to police, Suresh was drunk and sleeping on the platform at Ramanujam Nagar near Singanallur bus stand at 8.30 pm when an unidentified man doused the former with petrol and set him on fire. The suspect immediately escaped from the spot.

When Suresh cried for help, Karuppusamy, a construction worker, put out the fire and rescued him.

Suresh was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in a ‘108’ ambulance with 90% burn injuries.

Police suspect Subramani of Utahngarai in Krishnagiri district as the perpetrator of the crime as he had gone missing since the incident. Suresh had a previous enmity with Subramani.

The Singanallur police have registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC. Further investigation is on.
