Coimbatore: A 41-year-old wall painter was arrested on Sunday for making a hoax bomb threat call to a hospital near Singanallur. His wife used to work in the hospital and he blamed the hospital staff for his wife ditching him.
Police identified the accused as S Mathioli, 41, from Nayakkar Thottam in Poosaripalayam. His wife Saraswathi left her job in Naveen Hospital a year ago, and soon after that she separated from her husband.
Saraswathi stopped answering calls from her husband since then.
“Mathioli believed that his wife’s colleagues spoke ill of him to her, which lead to their separation. So he frequently called the hospital landline numbers, including hospital manager Nithyanandam’s number, and abused them in filthy language. They did not report to police as they knew Mathioli and hoped he would stop making the calls one day,” a police officer said.
On Saturday, Mathioli called Nithyanandam again and scolded him. Nithyanandam disconnected the call.
“Soon after, Mathioli called another number in the hospital and told the speaker that he had planted a bomb,” the officer said.
Nithyanandam immediately alerted police. A police team reached the hospital and combed the hospital premises for two hours searching for the bomb. The team declared that the call was a hoax.
Subsequently, Nithyanandam registered a complaint with police, who booked Mathioli under various sections including 294 (b) (using obscene words), 507 (criminal intimidation through anonymous communication) and 506 (1) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Police arrested Mathioli on Sunday. They produced him before a judicial magistrate and later lodged him in the Coimbatore central prison.
