COIMBATORE: It has been almost two months now the residents on Jayashree Nagar II Street taken their cars to go for work or on an outing with family. Ever since the municipal corporation started digging up the road for underground drainage work, daily routine of residents here was thrown into a tizzy. Neatly covered four wheelers could be seen parked outside every single home on this stretch most of them covered under tarpaulin sheets with a thick coat of dust and leaves deposited on it indicating prolonged halting.

"We are waiting for the work to get over and hope that they will speed up it up. It was horrible when it rained recently. The entire patch became slushy. It will be very difficult if an emergency comes at any of the houses on this stretch
as ambulance or any other vehicle will not be able to enter the colony," said S Palanisamy, a resident.
Though there is space for two wheelers to pass through but it is a difficult task as they have to literally manoeuvre themselves along side open manholes, deep pits and debris strewn all around it. On a pure logical basis it is nothing but providence that is keeping the motorists safe here as most of the two wheeler riders ride close to the boundary of the pit which has nothing but loose soil underneath and could cave in from excess weight.

"If only the corporation had instructed the workers to remove excess dirt piles from the road there would have been space for at least two wheelers to go. They have left everything in a mess though they have finished laying the pipeline and constructing the chamber at one end of the road," said TJ Antony, a senior citizen from Jayashree Nagar.
Apart from these there are gaping manholes on the road left uncovered offering a bird's eye view into the underground sewage chamber for those peering into it and also
posing a serious threat to public commuting on the stretch. Children especially the little ones
are not allowed to walk alone on the road and parents always accompany them to ensure they are safe.
"The road leads to one of the prominent private schools in the city and is used by children on a regular basis. But now they have to circumvent the entire stretch and take alternative route," said K Selvam, a resident of Jayashree Nagar.
When contacted K Sedhuvaraj councillor of ward no 64 said that he has already instructed the contractors and corporation officials to finish work at the earliest. He also added that specific orders were issued to cover the manholes of UGD chamber with immediate effect.
"Once the UGD and storm water drain work is completed, the corporation will lay a proper road in the area," Sedhuvaraj added.
