Salem: Illegal electric fence claims one life

SALEM: A 56-year-old man was electrocuted near Thammampatti here on Sunday morning, when he came into contact with an electric fence erected around a farmland.

Police arrested the landowner, P Shankar, 60, from Thammampatti, for setting up the fence without getting permission from the authorities.

Police said M Kodivel, an itinerant, was passing through the field around 3am. “He used to catch pigeons at night. In the process, he was going from one place to another in search of the birds. He entered Shankar’s field and accidently came into contact with the electric fence. He died on the spot,” a police officer said.

Villagers found the body on Sunday morning and alerted the Thammampatti police. Police retrieved the body and sent it to the Thammampatti government hospital for postmortem.
