Heart and lung transplantation: Coimbatore PSG Hospitals, Chennai’s MGM Healthcare sign MoU

COIMBATORE: City-based

PSG Hospitals

signed a

memorandum of understanding

(MoU) with Chennai-based MGM Healthcare on Thursday, to establish a

comprehensive centre

for heart and lung transplantation and heart failure clinic at PSG Hospitals.

This is expected to help the hospital support patients with complex and

chronic heart and lung ailments

, who require transplant of either or both organs. There is no hospital in the city that performs both transplants and this required patients to fly to other cities to get it done.

PSG which is a regular liver and kidney transplant centre performed a dual lung transplant in 2016. It is yet to start performing heart transplants and lung transplants regularly.

KMCH Hospital too which has performed five heart transplants so far, is yet to perform heart and lung transplants together.

The district has had three lung transplants cases so far. This was despite them having dedicated surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and perfusionists technicians among others.

The MoU will facilitate the clinical team from MGM Healthcare to closely work with the clinical team at PSG Hospital to provide treatment options for patients in both hospitals. MGM Healthcare has performed almost 100 heart and lung transplants until now.

It also aims at treating chronic heart and lung patients, who require a transplant of both organs, in the city.

“Recruiting these patients, maintaining them carefully till they receive a suitable cadaver and then putting them on immunosuppressants is crucial for them to have good success and survival rates,” said senior consultant for cardiology and heart failure at MGM Healthcare,

Dr R Ravikumar

.
