Gold ornaments stolen from Coimbatore jewellery store
COIMBATORE: An unidentified person stole more than 150 sovereigns of gold ornaments from Jos Alukkas Jewellery on the 100 Feet Road in Coimbatore in the early hours of Tuesday.
Coimbatore city police commissioner V Balakrishnan said five special teams were formed to nab the burglar.
Staff members who checked the CCTV footage after 10am on Tuesday noticed a stranger’s movement on the second and floors. The CCTV footage showed a youth wearing a mask and gloves moving on one of the floors with a bag at 2.29am. He collected small portions of gold ornaments kept in boxes and kept them in a bag.
On being alerted, Coimbatore city police commissioner Balakrishnan, deputy commissioners of police G Chandeesh and K Shanmugam and other police officials reached the spot and inspected the crime scene.
“The management of the shop carried out elevation and false ceiling work. The renovated shop was opened on April 14, 2023. An unidentified youth climbed on the steel pipes erected for the front elevation of the building work and he entered the building through the false ceiling of the second floor. He took away gold bangles, earrings, nose rings, ear studs and gold rings,” said DCP Shanmugam.
Fingerprint bureau sub-inspectors lifted a few fingerprints from the crime scene.
A sniffer dog was pressed into service. The dog did not find anything.
The burglar was using a shirt to hide his identity from the CCTV cameras. He abandoned the shirt near the jewellery showroom.
Balakrishnan told reporters that two private security guards were on duty at the jewellery showroom and 12 staff were staying at the building. But they were not aware of the incident.
“Between 150 and 200 sovereigns of gold ornaments might have been stolen. We suspect that a section of workers who were engaged in renovation work might have been involved in the burglary,” said Balakrishnan.
