Police identified the victim as

M Sathish

of Konarajapuram near Mayiladuthurai. Sathish was working in an embroidery unit at Serangadu and living in a room with his colleague

D Ranjith

, 20, of Sukkampatti in Trichy district.

Sathish and Ranjith were consuming liquor at an empty plot behind a private school around 11pm on Sunday when the gang came on three motorcycles, a police officer said.

The gang threatened the duo at knifepoint and tried to snatch cellphones from them. When Sathish fought back, the gang beheaded him using a sickle and took away the severed head, Ranjith told police during inquiry.

“Ranjith, who was also assaulted by the gang, managed to reach the main road and sought help from passersby,” the officer said.

Ranjith was taken to

Tirupur Government Medical College Hospital

for treatment. He is facing a criminal case in Musiri in Trichy district. Police retrieved Satish’s body and sent it for postmortem. Tirupur city police commissioner A G Babu on Monday formed four special teams to trace the head of the deceased and investigate the case.
