Coimbatore: Electricity minister

V Senthil Balaji

on Saturday said he has asked the newly-elected ward members from urban local bodies to prepare a report on the basic amenities that were required in their areas.
Talking to the media after attending the DMK district executive committee meeting that was held in a private hall at Kalapatti, he said the areas which need focus in the next five years would be determined based on the report. “The report will be forwarded to the chief minister to get special funds for developmental works.”
Balaji said the funds received in the urban local bodies during the erstwhile AIADMK regime was diverted for some other works. “An inquiry on the same is underway. Suitable action will be taken based on the final outcome of the probe.”
He said the victory in the urban local body elections was a recognition for the state government’s good governance and achievements of M K Stalin. He said the election was conducted with utmost transparency.
Balaji said he was receiving requisition letters from aspirants of mayor post and the same would be forwarded to the party leaders for consideration.
The minister said the DMK government was planning projects keeping in mind the electricity demand for the next 10 years. “During the AIADMK rule, no project was carried out to improve the electricity generation in the state.”
Referring to M K Stalin’s birthday, he said they had decided to celebrate the same in a grand manner. “Sports competition will be conducted for men and women in 152 places across the district. A gold ring will be presented to the babies born in government hospitals on his birthday.”
Earlier, chaos prevailed at the party’s executive committee meeting for a brief period, as the district women’s wing deputy secretary

Meena Jayakumar

accused the urban East district secretary

N Karthik

of denying her a ticket to contest the election.
When her turn to address the party cadres came, she said Karthik had spread false information about her to deny the party ticket. She also questioned Karthik for hindering her progress in the party. Meena, however, had to cut short her speech after supporters of Karthik asked her to stop her speech.
