Coimbatore: The Annur police on Wednesday arrested five people for stealing 1.5 tonnes of iron rods and angles stored for Athikadavu -Avinashi ground water recharge and drinking water supply scheme from the p roject site at Kunnathurampalayam in Annur on Sunday.
The arrested people were identified as M Gowtham, 24, of Weavers Colony at Tiruchengode in Namakkal, M
Prasanth, 24, of Pennagaram in Dharmapuri, G Boopathi, 25, of Lakkampatti in Salem,
K Venkatakrishnan
, 25, of Pennagaram in Dharmapuri and
R Navin
, 25, of Valappadi in Salem.
“The youths had no regular jobs. Boopathi is an English Literature graduate and rest are engineering graduates. Gowtham worked as a security guard at the sixth water pumping station at Kunnathurampalayam six months ago. His friend Prasanth joined the same work two months ago. The duo decided to steal iron materials from the station with the help of their three friends and stole iron rods and angles worth 1 lakh using a truck owned by Boopathi ’s father on Sunday morning,” said sub-inspector
Pandiarajan.
The gang was planning to sell the stolen goods to a seller near Thennampalayam when a police team nabbed them. Police seized the truck and the iron materials. The five people were booked under Section 379 of the Indian Penal code and were remanded in judicial custody. They were later lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.TNN
