Coimbatore: A pregnant female elephant was found dead at a check dam in Boluvampatti on Sunday evening. The pachyderm is suspected to have died of complications in its uterus.
Frontline staff of the forest department found the carcass around 5.30pm on Sunday when they were on rounds at Poondi North Beat in Boluvampatti Block -II reserve forest.
On Monday, forest veterinary officer A Sukumar carried out a postmortem in the presence of assistant conservator of forests M Senthilkumar and Boluvampatti forest ranger Suseendranath.
Veterinary officer Karthikeyan of Narasipuram assisted in the postmortem. Representatives from NGOs were also present.
Officer Sukumar said the elephant which was aged between 22 and 25-years might have died two days ago. A male fetus about 20- to 22-month-old was found inside its uterus.
The carcass was later buried in the evening. TNN
