SALEM: A drunk man shot his daughter-in-law and grandson with a country-made gun near Vazhapadi in Salem district on Monday evening. The woman and her son were admitted to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital, and their condition is reported to be stable.Police launched a search for the man, identified as P Kuppusamy, 55, of Thengalpatti near Vazhapadi, who went absconding after opening fire at his daughter-in-law and grandson.Around 5pm on Monday, Kuppusamy returned home in an intoxicated condition and engaged in an argument with his wife, Lakshmi. "He suddenly attacked her with a log," said an officer at the Vazhapadi police station. His daughter-in-law, S Anitha, 25, intervened and pushed Kuppusamy down to protect Lakshmi.In a fit of anger, Kuppusamy shot Anitha and her two-year-old son with the country gun before fleeing the scene. Anitha and her son, who sustained injuries, were taken to a private hospital in Vazhapadi. Later, they were referred to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for further care. The Vazhapadi police registered a case. They said Kuppusamy used the gun for hunting.
