Couple commit suicide after daughter elopes with lover

COIMBATORE: An elderly couple committed

suicide

near Nallur in Pollachi on Sunday after their 24-year-old daughter married a man from another community.

The deceased were identified as S Akathur Sami, 63, a farmer and his wife Swarnalatha, 53, of Kathuri Nagar at Nallur. “Their daughter Sneha was in love with a youth, who belongs to a different community. The parents had advised her not to continue the affair. But she eloped with her boyfriend and registered her marriage,” a police officer said.

Depressed over this, the couple attempted to commit suicide by consuming a pesticide. While Sami died on the spot, their relatives rushed Swarnalatha to the Pollachi Government Hospital. But doctors could not save her.

Pollachi west police have registered a case. Several police personnel were deployed in the village to prevent any untoward incident.
