Corpn to seek cut in property tax hike in Coimbatore
Coimbatore:With several councillors opposing the property tax hike by 6% at the council meeting on Friday, mayor K Ranganayaki announced that she would request the govt to reduce the same, citing it as a burden on the public.The meeting, held at Victoria Hall, was presided over by mayor K Ranganayaki, deputy mayor R Vetriselvan and corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran.As soon as the meeting began, several councillors from the DMK allies opposed the 6% hike in the property tax from October 1, 2024, and requested the civic body to reconsider its decision, as it was a huge burden on the people.Responding to their demands, mayor K Ranganayaki said she would submit a letter to the govt, requesting a reduction in the 6% increase in the property tax. She said the corporation had collected Rs464.71 crore in property tax for the 2024-25 financial year, with the north zone recording the highest collection percentage of 92.1, followed by the east zone (91.3), the west zone (90.9), the central zone (89.8) and the south zone (87.3).Corporation officials said the target set by the Directorate of Municipal Administration for property tax collection until March 31 was Rs462.21 crore. However, as on March 27, the corporation has collected Rs464.71 crore.At least 133 resolutions were tabled at the meeting, and all of them were passed. In a resolution, the corporation said applications must be obtained and registered at the respective zonal office for providing new water connections. Another resolution said any discrepancies in the property tax records should be corrected immediately on the system, based on proof provided by the public.
