Corpn prepares map of battered roads
Coimbatore: The city corporation has prepared a ward-wise map of battered roads. The map is expected to speed up approval from higher authorities for new road proposals. The map, available in soft copy, will also help authorities to ensure that roads in good condition are not mentioned as part of new proposals.Usually, an official would check the condition of a road before sending a proposal for re-laying or repairing it.Corporation commissioner M Prathap said the map shows roads coded in various colours. Those roads in good condition are marked with a specific colour, while those need to be re-laid are left out without any colour marking.Similarly, the recently laid roads are also coded in colours. The battered roads are re-laid under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF), the State Finance Commission (SFC) fund, Nagarpura Salai Mempattu Thittam (NSMT), and the corporation’s fund, he said. The ward-wise road map was recently shared with all urban local body heads suggesting that the same could be emulated, he said. “The map was prepared based on the city-wide assessment carried out with the help of engineering officials last month.”Another official said that the city has roads to a total extent of around 2,400km.The city corporation re-laid many roads in the last two years based on the complaints received during the ‘Makkal Sabai’ meetings held in 2021.The corporation allocated Rs 260 crore to relay 3,432 roads (567km) in the past two years. While a sizable number of road works have been completed, others are in various stages of work. Some roads are in a tender stage and works will begin soon, he said.
