Cops nab serial burglar, recover 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery

Coimbatore: The Sulur police arrested a notorious burglar on Saturday and recovered 30 sovereigns of stolen gold ornaments from him.The arrested person was identified as P Marimuthu, 33, a native of Nedungulam in Madurai district. He resided at Nadupatti near Nilakottai in Dindigul district and worked as an electrician.Marimuthu broke open a house on Karpaga Vinayakar Nagar at Pattanam in Sulur, belonging to R Shanmugasundaram, 62, to steal 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments on April 8, inspector Mathaiyan said. “Shanmugasundaram, a farmer, was staying with his wife Thilagavathi and son Srinivasan. The family had left for Kanjikonampalayam to visit Shanmugasundaram’s ailing mother Subbulakshmi. On April 6, Srinivasan returned to the house to collect some household items and returned to Kanjikonampalayam. On April 8, their neighbour Baskaran contacted Shanmugasundaram over phone and informed him that the main door lock of the house was open,” the officer said.Shanmugasundaram reached the house and found four sovereigns of ear studs, four sovereigns of gold necklace, one sovereign gold chain and gold ring missing. Based on his complaint, the Sulur police registered a case.Marimuthu had decamped with a 14-gram gold chain from the house of R Ramesh, 32, of Srisakthi Nagar at Mudalipalayam near Neelambur in January, the officer said. “Ramesh, a native of Turicorin district, is running a lathe workshop near Hope College in Coimbatore city. He left for his hometown with his family on January 17 after locking the house. The family returned on January 21 to find the front door lock open and the gold chain missing.”“Marimuthu was involved in four burglaries in Sulur police limits and one each at Kovilpalayam and Annur police station limits from January. He is facing 15 more burglary cases,” the inspector added.
