Commissioner seeks help to improve Swachh ranking

Coimbatore:

Corporation commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath

, who conducted a Swachh Bharat mission meeting at the central zonal office on Friday, urged the public to work to make Coimbatore a model corporation.

“Corporation workers are carrying out all sort of sanitation works in all wards. Door-to-door collection of segregated waste is being carried out and as much as 1,000 metric tonne waste is being processed at the Vellalore dump yard. The corporation has also started mass cleaning activities at major roads during the night hours. We are working towards turning Coimbatore into a garbage cart-less city,” Jatavath said.

The city corporation had slipped from 16th to 40th place in the Swachh Survekshan ranking. The civic body is working on to come up within 10 ranks in the next year, said an official, who attended the meeting. “The city’s ranking would improve if we can end open defecation, clogging of drains and use of banned plastic products. We should promote construction of rain water harvesting (RWH) structures in all buildings, composting of wet waste and source segregation of waste,” he said.

“Four to five ambassadors have been appointed in each ward and the corporation has been processing applications of some more ambassadors. The ambassadors will create awareness about garbage-less city. They would work hand in hand with the corporation officials,” he added.
