COIMBATORE: Amidst loud music and bursting of crackers, P Rajkumar was sworn in as the city’s new mayor on Wednesday. After garlanding the Anna statue, Rajkumar reached the corporation premises with pomp and show.
The gala celebration was a reminder of the sweeping victory that the party received in the bypolls with a margin of 2,91,343 votes. MLA’s S P Velumany, R Chinnasamy, T Malaravan, S Damodaran and V C Arukutty were present.

In the presence of Commissioner of Police A K Vishwanathan, collector Archana Patnaik and Deputy Commissioner P Gandhimathy, S Ganesh, the corporation commissioner administered the oath. After the oath was administered, S Ganesh handed over the sceptre to the new mayor.
“Appropriate use of the Rs 2,378 crore funds announced by the chief minister will be my first priority. All the projects would be completed at the earliest,” said Rajkumar. He also said he would ensure transparency and review projects regularly.
Immediately after assuming office, he conducted a meeting with all senior officials. Apart from a formal introduction, he also asked the officials to look into all pending projects to ensure quick completion.
