Coimbatore police to form two special teams to monitor movements of accused hailing from southern districts

COIMBATORE: A day after robbers struck at two places in the city, the Coimbatore city police commissioner V Balakrishnan on Tuesday directed police personnel to collect details of the accused from southern districts putting their signatures in Coimbatore courts to fulfil bail conditions.

According to him, judicial magistrate courts in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram districts often direct the people accused of various crimes to put their signatures before the judicial magistrate courts or police stations in Coimbatore city, while granting them bail.

“They often stay here for a while and commit robbery and other crimes. We will form two special teams to closely monitor their movements. The special teams will collect details of the accused and their place of stay in the city. We hope the move will help curb robberies in the city,” the police commissioner said.

Another source said whenever the accused in murder cases in the southern districts move court for bail, police officers there would request court to direct them to appear before the courts or police stations in Coimbatore city to put their signatures as a condition while granting bail to protect their lives.

“If they appear before local courts to put their signature, chances of them getting attacked and murdered by the friends and family members of the victims are high. And when coming to Coimbatore city to meet the bail condition, some of them carry weapons along with them,” he said.

The officer said they had come to know that a few of the accused from the southern districts were roaming around the city at night hours and committing robberies. “The special teams will collect their entire details and carry out surprise checks at their place of stay in the city. We will monitor them closely.”

The city police commissioner, meanwhile, said the police officers deployed for night beat patrol had been advised to intensify vehicle check from 11pm to 5am daily. “People roaming around the city without any purpose will be questioned and their vehicles will be seized if they fail to produce valid documents for the vehicles,” he said.
