Coimbatore district collector holds meeting with representatives of parties on SIR
COIMBATORE: Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Thursday held a meeting with the representatives of recognised political parties regarding the implementation of the special intensive revision (SIR) in the 10 assembly constituencies in the district.
Officials said the Election Commission had implemented the special intensive revision eight times in the country from 1951 to 2004. SIR would help control the multiple entries of voters and ensure the removal of the dead voters from the electoral roll.
Election officials will visit door to door and distribute the forms to each voter. The forms will have all the details of the voters, and the officials will verify the voter's details. Booth level officers will visit the voters at least three times to ensure the accuracy of the details.
The officers were directed to ensure that the names of eligible citizens were not missed on the electoral roll. However, people who do not have eligibility should not be included on the electoral roll.
Polling stations will be restructured by the Election Commission of India to ensure each polling station has 1,200 voters. The voters should possess any one of the valid documents out of 13 options.
The ECI is planning to release the draft electoral roll on Dec 9, 2025. The final electoral roll will be released on Feb 26, 2026.
Representatives of AIADMK and BJP who took part in the meeting said they welcomed the special intensive revision and requested the district collector to sensitise the people about it. However, CPM and CPI claimed that SIR did not address the north Indian voters who are working in Coimbatore.
CPM district secretary P Padmanaban said there was no need to implement SIR in Tamil Nadu.
