COIMBATORE: A CCTV camera footage of a cop on a motorcycle slapping a youth who crossed the road while looking at his mobile phone went viral on Monday.
The incident took place on the busy Nallampalayam-Sanganoor Road on Sunday evening. The video showed the youth stunned by the unexpected assault and squatting on the road in pain.
The youth has been identified as Mohanraj, of Chinnavedampatti in the city, who works in a private company at Nallampalayam. The cop in question was identified as police head constable, Jayaprakash, attached to the Kavundampalayam law and order police station.
The public condemned the assault, with many pointing out that the policeman could have warned the youth for his negligence while crossing the road, and that the cop did not have any right to slap him. Several others pointed out that the cop himself was not wearing a helmet when riding his bike and violating rules.
Soon after the footage went viral, senior police officers took note of the incident and summoned Jayaprakash to report to the city police control room for inquiry. Further probe is on.
