COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police seized 874 bottles of liquor meant to be sold illegally on Thiruvalluvar Day on Friday, which was as a dry day. They arrested eight people on charges of selling liquor illegally. Five of the arrested men were remanded in judicial custody while the others were released on bail.
A police officer said a city-wide check was conducted on Friday to prevent the illegal sale of liquor. The teams checked whether any Tasmac bars were open. The teams seized liquor from a few such bars and other places. Police seized 680 bottles of liquor bottles from a Tasmac bar near Singanallur and launched efforts to nab the man who runs it.
The Podanur police registered two cases and arrested T Karuppusamy, 25, M Ramthal, 65, of Vellalore, and S Michaelraj, 22, of Ramanathapuram. The Bazaar police registered a case and arrested A Ameer, 25, of Kurichi Pirivu and K Rishanth, 25, of Selvapuram. All five were remanded in judicial custody.
The Singanallur police registered two cases while Peelamedu and Saravanampatti police registered one case each for selling Indian made foreign liquor on a dry day.
