Coimbatore city police seek land to construct three stations
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police are seeking land from the district administration and the city municipal corporation to construct three police stations -- at Kavundampalayam, Sundarapuram and Karumbukadai. These three police stations are currently functioning from private buildings.
Until April 2023, as many as 17 police stations had been functioning under the Coimbatore city police from their own buildings. The state govt created new police stations at Kavundampalayam, Karumbukadai and Sundarapuram after a car blast in front of the Sangameshwarar temple at Kottaimedu in October 2022. All three new police stations were inaugurated by former director general of police and head of the police force (HoPF) Dr C Sylendra Babu in May 2023.
Now, the city police have decided to construct their own buildings for the three new police stations. “We sought help from the municipal corporation to construct a new building for Sundarapuram police station. The corporation agreed to provide 30 cents of land at SIDCO near Sundarapuram in the city. We are expecting at least 50 cents of land to construct the buildings with enough parking space,” said commissioner of police A Saravana Sundar.
He added that the city police had identified 30 cents of land near the Housing Board Building at Kavundampalayam. “Officials from the revenue department will acquire land for the police department soon,” said Saravana Sundar.
The police were not able to find land in the Karumbukadai area. They identified around 30 cents of land in the Pullukadu area, but the area falls under the Bazaar police station jurisdiction.
“We have approached the district administration and the city municipal corporation to find some land parcel in the Karumbukadai police jurisdiction to construct a new building for the police station,” said Saravana Sundar.
