COIMBATORE: It was pitch-dark and she was alone against a well-built daily wage labourer more than thrice her age, but a Class X girl student from Pollachi mustered her courage and bit him, as he was trying to rape her, and escaped.
According to the Pollachi West police, the incident took place at 7.45pm on Monday when the 15-year-old schoolgirl was returning home from a tuition centre.
“The daily wage labourer saw her while she was walking home and sought her help to lift a gunny bag. When she went near him, he gagged her and dragged her to a nearby abandoned room on the roadside in a fleeting second and attempted to rape her. The minor girl suddenly bit him on his hand and rushed outside,” a police officer said.
The daily wage labourer was, however, in no mood to give up on her and tried to give her a chase, the officer said. “He was drunk and fell down on the road. The girl, meanwhile, sought help from the motorists on the stretch. The daily wage labourer managed to give them the slip.”
According to the officer, one of her neighbours, who was travelling on the stretch, dropped the girl home. “She narrated the incident to her parents and they accompanied her to Pollachi West police station to lodge a complaint the same night.”
Based on the girl’s complaint, police registered a case and arrested the daily wage labourer on Tuesday morning. The officer identified the accused as K Sivakumar, 49, a resident of Palakkad Road in Pollachi.
He was booked under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and produced before a judicial magistrate court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
