Official sources said he submitted his resignation on September 23 and the governor-chancellor accepted it on September 25.

P Kaliraj

, the vice-chancellor of the university and the chairman of the syndicate, confirmed that Kanagasabapathi had resigned from the university’s syndicate. “We got information that he had submitted his resignation and the governor has accepted it,” he said.

Despite several attempts, Kanagasabapathi could not be reached for his version.

After he was nominated as a member of the university’s syndicate by the governor on September 4 for a second consecutive three-year term, there was a widespread controversy in academic circles, because the sitting vice-president of a political party had been nominated to a university’s syndicate. Academicians said though the move was legally right, it was ethically wrong.

Politicians too had raised concerns over this. Coimbatore MP P R Natarajan of the CPM and DMK’s Singanallur MLA N Karthik had condemned the move saying the BJP was intervening in higher education and demanded that the governor revoke the nomination.
