Salem: Catholic diocese of Salem, which observed Social Harmony Day in Salem city on Saturday, honoured 10 people, who rendered tireless service to the society.
Bishop Arulselvam Rayappan was the chief guest while Swami Yatharthamanadar of Ramakrishna Mission and moulavi Anvar Ali Parkavi were the guests of honour.
The bishop said India was a multicultural and a diverse nation.

He insisted on the need to promote peaceful coexistence. “Catholics never engage in forceful conversion, rather they respect other religions and beliefs. The church law, formally known as canon law, never accepts forceful conversion. India is home to all the major religions of the world. Let us respect one another, promote social harmony and serve humanity irrespective of creed, caste and language.”
DMK MP S R Parthiban and former assistant professor of Periyar University Jegananthan Vimal spoke about the positive aspects of religions that promote equality, mutual respect and love. Fr Casmir, Ranganatan, Bharanidhran, Syed Musthapa, Imran Ali, Selvamani, sr Celin, Sujatha, sr Ephrem & Sangavi, who are engaged in social service in Salem & Namakkal, were given ‘Best Social Service Award’. tnn
